Det, der mangler, er at finde en sandhed, der er en sandhed for mig, at finde den idé, som jeg er villig til at leve og dø for. Hvad nytte ville det i den forstand gøre, hvis jeg opdagede en såkaldt »objektiv sandhed«, hvis jeg kom til at forstå filosofernes systemer og kunne kritisere dem og påpege inkonsekvenser på ethvert punkt? Og hvad nytte ville det i den forstand gøre at kunne udarbejde en statsteori og dermed opbygge en verden, som jeg ikke selv ville bebo, men blot opretholde, så andre kunne se den? Vermittelst der Sinnlichkeit also werden uns Gegenstände gegeben, und sie allein liefert uns Anschauungen; durch den Verstand aber werden sie gedacht, und von ihm entspringen Begriffe.
